Founded in 1982, The Human Services Consortium of East Harlem (“the Consortium”) is a membership group that brings together 40 non-profit service providers, community representatives, and, city officials to ensure, improve, and maintain the quality and delivery of social services and healthcare in East Harlem. The Consortium’s efforts focus upon agency networking, coordination of service delivery, advancing public knowledge of human service programs available to the residents of Community Planning Board 11 (“East Harlem”) – such programs including but not limited to housing, education, health, mental health, legal, recreational, vocational, cultural, and counseling services; on promoting the efficient delivery of such human services to the residents of East Harlem; on identifying human services needs in East Harlem; on coordinating the efforts of member organizations to develop programs to meet those needs; on publicizing the availability of human service programs; on sponsoring community fairs and cultural events to promote the goals of the Consortium.
Most recently, the Consortium spearheaded the East Harlem Taskforce on Racial Inclusion and Equity, facilitating a participatory budgeting process that culminated in a series of community initiatives including a youth-led Photo Voice community needs assessment leading to a mobile gallery, a youth forum attended by community and elected leaders, a job and resource fair, and a community healing/neighborhood recovery event.
The National Institutes of Health is pleased to announce the winners of the STRIVE for Change: Drawing on Our Strengths Art Challenge, a prize competition for original artwork highlighting the strengths of communities experiencing health disparities.
Thirteen youth (ages 14 to 19) in East Harlem, NYC, engaged in a photovoice project depicting their hopes and dreams for health and well-being in their community. Zoelene Hill, Ph.D., of the New York Academy of Medicine, led the project in which youth took photographs and told their stories to uplift youth voices, visions, and strategies for improving health and well-being in their community. The panels from the project will become part of a mobile art installation that will be featured in buildings and offices across East Harlem.
The TRIE Steering Committee is tasked with conducting a community needs assessment for East Harlem to determine priority areas of need for 2021-2022.
